写回信与首次给人写信不同，它必须以别人给你的来信为基础，展开你的写作思路，决不能置他人的来信于不顾。因此，第一步首先要细读来信并读懂信的内容，包括一些细节及信的言外之意。其次要对来信所提出的问题作出相应的反应，表明自己的态度和看法，并解释其原因。最后，写回信者也可以介绍自己方面的新闻或向来信人提出建议或要求等，这样"一来一往"则发挥了书信的.功能，达到了相互交流之目的。
